Dr. Jeffrey A. Hunt of Vein & Cosmetic Center of Tampa Bay compares and contrasts Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy with synthetic therapies.

Tampa Bay, FL — Hormones act as regulating agents, helping to maintain the body’s systems. Tampa Bay Specialist Jeffrey A. Hunt, DO explains that when hormones fluctuate, a patient may experience a number of negative effects, including mood swings, difficulty sleeping, memory fog, decreased sex drive, and weight gain. He says synthetic hormones and Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) are two treatment options available to help stabilize hormonal imbalances. He adds that an imbalance can occur as a result of the natural aging process, adverse health conditions, or other reasons. To help individuals determine which option may be best for their needs and goals, Dr. Hunt clarifies the distinctions between synthetic hormones and BHRT.

Synthetic hormones are engineered in a laboratory, Dr. Hunt states. “The more you structurally modify a hormone, the less it will perform all the functions intended, and the more likely it is to produce negative side effects.” He says that synthetics typically will be administered through creams, patches, injections, or pills, which may not provide the slow, even disbursement necessary for optimal effects. Conversely, Dr. Hunt notes that bio-identical hormones are derived from all-natural plant sources, and they are selected to mimic the body’s natural chemical composition. Furthermore, he explains that the hormones will be delivered through a long-lasting, slow-release subdermal implant.

Dr. Hunt indicates that studies have suggested bio-identical hormones can provide abundant benefits to individuals who have unstable hormone levels, including a potential reduction in cancer risk. “We have also seen significant improvements in energy, drive, libido, and quality of sleep.” To maximize the efficacy of BHRT, he advises patients to utilize nutraceutical supplements, which can help the body properly metabolize the hormones.

Ultimately, Dr. Hunt believes BHRT offers significant advantages over synthetic hormone replacement systems. He encourages patients who are feeling the effects of a chemical imbalance to research the benefits of bio-identical hormones. “Bio-identicals have shown improvements from all organ systems, ranging from stronger muscles to stronger bones to [enhanced] mental focus and clarity.”
