This photo shows a patient who had her left leg treated by Jeffrey A. Hunt D.O., R.V.S., R.V.P.I. almost 12 years ago. The right leg was treated by another doctor 2 ½ years ago. You can see the very bulbous veins that have appeared in the right leg after the more recent treatment. She is now back to see Dr. Hunt to correct the right leg as well.*
What areVaricose Veins?
Causes of Varicose Veins

Causes of Varicose Veins

Although the exact cause of varicose veins is still unknown, physicians have determined that varicose veins form when one-way valves become weak and malfunction. Varicose veins commonly form when blood can no longer flow easily against gravity. Whether a product of dysfunctional valves or weakened walls, the end result is usually bulging veins and leg pain. There are a number of risk factors that seem to contribute to poor blood vessel functioning, including:3

  • Trauma
  • Standing or sitting for long periods of time
  • Family history
  • Hormonal shifts during pregnancy
  • Obesity

Symptoms of
Varicose Veins?

The symptoms of varicose veins include:

  • Visibly enlarged veins on the surface of the skin
  • Mild swelling of the feet and ankles
  • Skin discoloration
  • Achy, heavy, or painful legs
  • Cramping or throbbing in the legs
  • Itching sensation in the lower legs and ankle

Varicose Veins
procedures

At the Vein & Cosmetic Center of Tampa Bay, we offer the most advanced technology to reduce varicose veins, from endovenous ablation laser treatments to sclerotherapy injections. Dr. Jeffrey A. Hunt and his experienced, knowledgeable staff can help patients determine which varicose vein treatment option is most appropriate for their medical needs.

Ultrasound-guided  Sclerotherapy
for Medical Vein Treatment

When applied to vein treatments, ultrasound technology can achieve tremendous results. Ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy is an outpatient procedure, during which Dr. Hunt conducts an ultrasound scan of the legs to determine the size, location, and function level of the veins. He then locates problematic veins, guides the sclerotherapy injections, and closes them. The entire procedure takes about 15 minutes and is repeated several times over a few weeks.

Sclerotherapy patients are encouraged to continue their normal activities, particularly exercise since circulation helps promote recovery. People often report playing tennis, walking several miles, or returning to work immediately after treatment. Several check-ups are scheduled at two and four-month intervals to ensure the veins have not reopened.

Prior to the development of ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, a painful and expensive procedure known as stripping was used to treat varicose veins. Patients often required hospitalization, and weeks of recovery, and often experienced noticeable scarring. Additionally, this procedure may only have removed the patient’s major saphenous vein, and may not have treated other malfunctioning vessels. Instances of recurrence are also high in patients treated with the stripping technique. In sclerotherapy treatments without ultrasound, doctors can only treat the veins they see or feel, while the deeper veins, often the source of the problem, go undetected. A doctor viewing the veins through ultrasound is less likely to miss a vein and is more precise in placing the injection—an important factor since misplacing the solution can cause scarring in skin and muscle tissue. As a result of treating saphenous veins, the recurrence of spider veins is significantly reduced.

The price of ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy for varicose veins is usually about half the cost of surgery. Most insurance companies will cover this treatment.

Florida vein specialist, Dr. Jeffrey Hunt, explains the multitude of advantages associated with ultrasound guided sclerotherapy treatment  for those patients looking to remove unsightly variscose or spider veins. As Dr. Hunt explains, The Vein & Cosmetic Center of Tampa Bay has completed over 80,000 successful sclerotherapy treatments. What is CoolTone™?

Laser treatments

Laser therapy for vein removal, or endovenous thermal ablation, is a treatment for damaged veins or vascular lesions. Laser treatments are often ideal for varicose veins that do not respond to injections.

TVS Endolaser™

Vein removal with TVS Endolaser is more effective, faster, and safer than previous vein treatments. This procedure is performed by using a small laser fiber inserted into the vein. The targeted varicose veins absorb this energy, causing them to coagulate and then disappear.

Dornier Medilas D FlexiPulse Laser

This high performance wave laser combines 940 nm wavelength with Power Bar technology. This laser is ideally suited for hemangiomas or small red spider veins that are resistant to sclerotherapy.

1064 YAG Laser

This versatile laser is best used for blue subdermal veins on the face and body.

Recovery from Laser Vein Removal

Following your laser therapy treatment, you will wear a single leg compression stocking for two days. Patients can begin walking and return to normal activities immediately after treatment.

Advantages of Laser Vein Removal

TVS Endolaser™ is a non-invasive treatment that doesn’t require any incisions, unlike invasive treatments that can cause bruising, and scarring, and require a longer recovery period.

1

Preparation

The medical professional will cleanse your skin and may apply a topical anesthetic to minimize discomfort during the treatment. You will be asked to wear protective eyewear to protect your eyes from the laser light.

2

Conditioning with Nd:YAG beam

The medical professional will begin the treatment by using the Nd:YAG beam to condition the skin with deep dermal heating. This prepares the skin for the next step of the treatment.

3

Removing old skin with Er:YAG beam

Next, the medical professional will use the Er:YAG beam to gently remove the old skin with precise micro-ablated channels. This step removes the damaged outer layers of skin, revealing smoother, more refreshed skin beneath.

4

Ablating with a light peeling beam

The final step of the treatment is to ablate the skin with a light peeling beam, removing any remaining superficial imperfections. This step completes the rejuvenation process and leaves the skin looking smoother, more even, and refreshed.

5

Aftercare

After the treatment, the medical professional will provide aftercare instructions, including applying a topical cream to soothe the skin, avoiding sun exposure, and using recommended skincare products to enhance the treatment results.

The entire treatment typically takes 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area and the number of areas being treated. Most individuals experience minimal discomfort during the treatment and can return to normal activities immediately after the treatment.
