Sun damage comes in many forms, and treating the numerous skin conditions that result from excess sun exposure can often require a variety of techniques. Fortunately, our cosmetic center offers some of the most advanced laser skin resurfacing methods available, including the ResurFX® laser and the two-part treatment system known as Levulan® Kerastick® and BLU-U®. Determining whether one or both techniques can help achieve your dermatologic goals requires a better understanding of the specific purpose of each. Here’s a quick overview to assist in selecting the right laser skin treatment for your needs.
ResurFX®Laser: ResurFX® (Erbium 1565) is a minimally invasive fractional laser designed to treat cosmetic skin conditions – such as fine lines, acnes scars, and discolorations – as well as medical concerns like actinic keratosis (AK). ResurFX® laser skin resurfacing typically offers rapid healing and promotes natural collagen production. Though often effective on AK lesions, it is more commonly used as an aesthetic enhancement tool.
Levulan® Kerastick® and BLU-U®: A two-part system designed to treat precancerous cells, the Levulan® Kerastick® and BLU-U® light treatment is single-minded in its approach. The procedure targets and destroys AK cells using a combination of a topical solution and blue light illumination. This system is highly effective at removing AK lesions, which can develop into squamous cell carcinoma—the second most deadly form of skin cancer.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Jeffrey Hunt will discuss your unique concerns and develop a customized treatment plan to address your cosmetic and medical aspirations. Depending on your goals, Dr. Hunt may recommend one, both, or even a different skin resurfacing technique to achieve the best results possible.
